Boulder Neighborhood Guide: Newlands

newlands north boulder parkPeople love this classic Boulder neighborhood. Wedged in between Mapleton and Wonderland Hills, the Newlands neighborhood is a beautiful one that officially includes North Boulder park and it’s baseball diamonds, playgound and sheltered picnic areas. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that Newlands backs up to the foothills and offers homeowners Mount Sanitas as a backdrop.

History: This neighborhood was originally developed in 1871 by the Newland family. It started as a large orchard and as time went on, was divided up for sale. Many lots in the Newlands neighborhood still bear the apple trees that the Newland family planted many years ago. In 1922, Boulder Community Hospital opened and, located in the middle of the Newlands, presented itself as an anchor for the surrounding neighborhood.

Housing: Again, not an area with much affordable housing (notice a trend in Boulder real estate?). If your budget is a million dollars, then you might find something you like here. Much of the Newlands was populated in the 1920’s with many lots remaining empty until the ’40’s. Because of this, you’ll see a nice range of architectural styles, everything from post-war bungalows to sleek modern rebuilds.

There’s the flagship Moe’s Bagels, the cyclist’s meetup spot Vic’s coffee shop, a wine shop, a drugstore, an Italian restaurant and a fantastic small grocer, among other things. If the need arises, Pearl Street is located a short walk away, just down the hill from this neighborhood.

Family & Fitness: The Newlands neighborhood sits at the base of Mount Sanitas, making hikes close and easily accessible from your doorstep. Additionally, the Red Rock network of trails connects up with this neighborhood, offering even more miles of hiking possibilities. If outdoor recreation isn’t your thing, the North Boulder Rec center offers a large variety of fitness classes along with an indoor pool.

Schools: Foothills Elementary, Casey Middle and Boulder High

Quirks: This might be one of the only neighborhoods in Boulder to have it’s own Facebook page. If you live here, be sure to like it. Adding to the neighborhood feeling of the Newlands is the fact that they have their own community-based volunteer organization that plans activities and provides tips on living a greener life.

Major Street Boundaries: Alpine to Iris, 3rd to Broadway

There’s no arguing that Newlands is a fun and family-friendly neighborhood. With the wide streets,  old trees and gorgeous houses, it’s clear why people enjoy calling this area home.
