This Weekend In and Around Boulder

What a week, Boulder. Having gone through the 1000-year floodplain ourselves, Texas was just hit with what’s being called the worst storm in U.S. history. If you’re looking for vetted organizations worthy of your assistance from afar, cash is king in these times of need. Check out organizations like the Houston Food Bank (where every $1 donated empowers them to distribute $6 worth of food) and the Charity Navigator-rated nonprofits on this list, as well as this list from the Houston Chronicle. We keep hearing reports and reading stories of neighbors helping neighbors out there and it’s heartwarming to know that what we saw here after the flood is happening elsewhere. There’s incredible power in community.

Speaking of worthy causes, don’t forget to register for the 2017 Doggie Dash on September 24! Grab your pup and strut around the Boulder Reservoir to help the HSBV in their mission, which assists over 7,000 animals each year.

It must be Fall (or at least the school year’s equivalent)l–the CU Buffs are playing this Friday, against long rivals CSU! The website says the game will be in Denver, not Boulder, but still–time to get out your Buff fan gear and start rooting for the home team again!

Also happening Friday is a live album recording over at eTown! Talk about a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes machinations, eTown delivers again with a full concert that will be a live album when all’s said and done. ETown’s events always sell out quickly, so best get your tickets now to this unique event.

Boulder Theatre’s ancillary concert venue, The Lounge, is hosting two nights of a livestream of Phish’s concert at Dick’s Sporting Goods Arena. This should be a fun way to see this live performance in local comfort, if you can’t get to the actual concert live.

Oh man, Boulder buddies, I was just about to tell you about the Indigo Girls being at our awesome little Chautauqua this Sunday, but gosh darn it if they’re not sold out. Of course, I might have expected such…well, sorry about that. Hopefully you’re one of those lucky ones who got a ticket!

Labor Day (that’s this Monday, September 4th) is the very last day you can participate in the Boulder Passport Program: 2017 Boulder Passport. So if you still want sweet summer-scented deals on drinks all over town this weekend, it’s your last chance to take advantage of this great offer.

Have a great time this weekend, Boulder!

Weekend Events In and Around Boulder: August 25-27, 2017

By Jennifer Zukowski

This weekend’s event roundup is proudly sponsored by the folks over at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley and their 2017 Doggie Dash! Just look at that goofy pup in the photo above. What’s not to love?! Get registered today and you and your fur-ever family member can strut round the Boulder Reservoir next month and help raise funds for an amazing organization that helps over 7,000 animals each year. There will be a beer garden (for the pup parents), a treat tent (for the pups), and plenty of other cool things to do before, during, and after the Dash. Want more info? We did a great write-up on this year’s event.

RegisterTODAY!

The Boulder International Fringe Festival is celebrating its final week of fantastic performances, everyone, and boy is the lineup this year exciting! Storytellers, one-person shows, acrobatics, modern dance, a queer cabaret, politically themed burlesque…you name it, the Fringe has it. Fringe Central is located in the back area of Trident Cafe, and I heard tell there are 2017 Fringe tshirt on sale for super cheap. The Encore Performances of the Fringe are happening this Sunday–the three acts that won three different awards will be showing their pieces one more time, so if you missed the fest, or see a show you missed that you wanted to catch again, that won one of these awards, you’ll have one more chance of seeing them over at the Nomad Theatre.

Jake Johansen, one of the best comedians in the country (and Dave Letterman’s all time favorite), is coming to perform his hilariously bizarre stand up right here in our little Dairy Center, everyone! He’s seriously one of the funniest guys I’ve ever seen, and I’m a stand-up aficionado, so believe me that you want to waste no time in getting your tickets to that. But only if your’re 18 or over.

The 2017 Tour de Fat is coming to the Boulder Theatre this weekend, everyone! This is such a fun, Boulder-style event sponsored by New Belgium brewery, a close neighbor of ours. The bicycle centered, beer fueled event goes everywhere, really, but this weekend it’ll culminate in a big multi-artist concert over at Boulder Theatre. It’s a party not to be missed.

Speaking of parties, Twisted Pine is having one of their Parties With A Purpose on Friday. Now, I can’t find on their website what time this party is, but I do know that they will be giving a portion of that day’s profits will go to charity. This weekend’s charity is SPAN.

Enjoy your weekend, Boulder!

It’s the weekend, Boulder, and as usual, there’s so much fun stuff to do!

Hey, what do you know–it’s the Boulder International Fringe Festival again, folks, and it starts Wednesday, with performances of all kinds happening this weekend and next! So many fringey productions are on the roster this year, from burlesque to one-person shows, cabaret, comedy, political commentary, drama, dance, and much much more. Fringe Central is in the back area of Trident Cafe this year, so that’s where to get your tickets and performance schedules (besides online).

Fringe is not the only fest happening in Boulder this weekend. Saturday also marks the Boulder Craft Beer Festival, and boy does that lineup sound spectacular! Beer games, live music, food, and of course, all kinds of craft beer to sample will abound, over at North Boulder Park. Don’t forget your sunscreen, and make sure to Uber home!

Beloved Boulder resident, teacher, amazing poet, Jack Collom, recently passed away, and Naropa is hosting a memorial reading in his honor, on Sunday. Come celebrate the life of a great man and a great poet, may he rest in peace.

September 4th marks the end of the Boulder Passport program, so get with the great deals while they’re still happenin’: 2017 Boulder Passport. It’s a screaming multi-bargain for festive beverages all over Boulder, so hop on board while you still can.

Have a good one, Boulder, whatever you do!

Boulder Events In and Around Town: August 11-13, 2017

By Jennifer Zukowski

Another weekend, another fun panoply of events to enjoy, Boulder!

Friday is another of Twisted Pine’s fundraising events, called Pints With a Purpose. This Friday, every tasty Twisted Pine pint consumed donates part of its sales to World Child Cancer. Consuming good brews, helping a good cause? It’s a win-win.

The last day of the 2017 Aerial Dance Festival is this Friday, so if you’ve missed its spectacular shows and fun workshops up till now, get there Friday before you have to wait another year. This is a unique festival, celebrating all things aerial dance, and we’re lucky enough to have amazing guest artists from all over the world collect right here in Boulder.

Know what else is over after this weekend? The Colorado Shakespeare Festival. Yep, it’s that time of the summer again,  for the final performances of Shakespeare Under the Stars, till next year. This year has been quite the exciting season for them, as they cast a female Hamlet, as well as used the same cast for Hamlet and Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which is quite the postmodern romp, and such a daring, fun thing to produce. Catch both shows plus more this weekend for their closing nights.

ETown is having another live radio show taping, Boulder, and afterwards an album release party! What a treat, to witness the making of one of the best variety radio shows around, and then celebrate the new album with the artists in a musical experience afterwards. Get your tickets for these now–eTown’s radio show tapings especially, usually sell out fast.

Eric Budd is running for Boulder City Council, and Laughing Goat is hosting a campaign announcement/launch party for him on Sunday. Come by Sunday afternoon, enjoy a beverage of  your choice, and hear what he has to say about what he wants to do for our city.

September 4th marks the end of the Boulder Passport program, so get with the great deals while they’re still happenin’: 2017 Boulder Passport. It’s a screaming multi-bargain for festive beverages all over Boulder, so hop on board while you still can.

Have a great weekend, Boulder!

School is still out and man, it’s a bit brisk, too! That doesn’t mean the summer fun’s come to a halt, however. There’s plenty happening in and around town, so check out these weekend events, Boulder!

Sundays at 2251 is back this Sunday–a festive gathering in a neighborhood parking lot in the Goss/Grove area, talented DJs, dancing, and a grill is the summery fare for this casual, festive event. Such a very Boulder summer thing to do, know what I mean?

Talking about a Boulder-y thing to do: this Friday there’s a live radio show taping at e-Town, and as of this writing it’s not sold out yet! These events are a real treat–this one will feature John Moreland and Phoebe Hunt, so it should be something special to experience.

Have you been over to the Aerial Dance Festival yet? This is a summer Boulder tradition in its 19th year, and is a unique festival unlike any others in the world. Local aerialists Frequent Flyers Productions host instructors from across the globe, who teach workshops and perform in spectacular showcases for a couple weeks right here in our little town! It’s going strong this weekend, with workshops during the week, and performances all weekend, and it only runs through the 11th, so don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a beautiful artform from the best of the best.

The Colorado Music Festival up at Chautauqua is drawing to a close, Boulder (since we’re talking Boulder summer traditions), and the finale is Friday, with the great Gil Shaham. Here’s to another fantastic festival. Can you believe it’s already over?

It’s the last month of the Boulder Passport program, so get with the great deals while ye may: 2017 Boulder Passport. It’s a screaming multi-bargain for festive beverages all over Boulder, so hop on board while you still can.

Have fun this weekend, Boulder!

By Kelly Tidd

Boulder County Fair

Pack your sunscreen, water bottle, and appetite, because next weekend, the Boulder County Fair is coming to town! And by town, we mean Longmont, of course, on their fairgrounds. Since 1869, the Boulder County Fair brings an extra slice of excitement to an already action-packed Boulder summer pie. What will you carve-out this year for you and yours? With live music, rodeo action, and four-wheeled events, there’s surely something to get you charged-up.

Here’s a quick preview of what’s in store while the fair is in town (it runs July 28-August 6):Continue Reading

Happy hot weekend, Boulder! Here’s what’s going on:

One thing Boulder is known for besides fit people and craft beer, is innovative and young entrepreneurs. This Friday evening, Dream Tank (a local think tank for innovators) is hosting an event called World’s Best Innovators: Kids! This is an evening where kids pitch their project ideas to solve a worldwide problem. It’s the culmination of Dream Tank’s 5-Day Accelerator program, and it sounds like a really interesting evening–I wonder what these kids have come up with to save our world?

Missed last week’s arts festival downtown? Well this weekend, there’s another outdoor festival, this one happening Sunday; during the day at Central Park, then culminating in an evening at The Riverside. Hosted by CMKY, speaking of local innovators…

Swingsummer Nights is beginning at the Dushanbe Teahouse. Come swing dance, after a lesson. No partners required, only the mood to dance–it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing…

Remember The Boulder Passport? It’s still summer, so it’s still happening:  2017 Boulder Passport. It’s a smoking hot deal for drinks all over Boulder. Sign up before the summer comes to an end!

Have a great time this weekend, Boulder!

By Jennifer Zukowski

It’s another July weekend, Boulder, and as usual, there’s plenty shaking in and around town!

It’s Bastille Day on Friday. Vive la France! …what? Just me?

No, but seriously: Friday is Tube to Work Day in Boulder! The Friday morning commute just got cooler (and a whole lot weirder), as working denizens don business casual and wetsuits (helmet and closed toed shoes required), and tube down the creek, starting at Eben G. Fine Park, and ending…well, wherever you work.

The Pearl Street Arts Fest is happening downtown this weekend, too: all day Saturday and Sunday, juried artists of all genres and kinds will be displaying their wares for sale, interaction, and enjoyment. Music, performances, and food and drink will of course be part of the festivities, as is the norm for us in Boulder.

Hey! There’s an art exhibit opening and a mural dedication happening on Saturday, too, speaking of arts. It’s called Vibrant Femmes: female-centered, this reception will celebrate a slew of female artists over at madelife gallery, and will also unveil their public murals! Sounds like a great way to close out an artistic Saturday.

The Boulder Passport is going strong:  2017 Boulder Passport. This is a great deal for slaking your July thirst at venues  all over Boulder.

Have fun this weekend, everyone!

Happy weekend, Boulder! You all staying cool out there?

There’s a lovely shady little performance space in the back of Shine restaurant, and this weekend there’s an award-winning one-man show happening there. Called “Growing Into My Beard,” this piece (which includes comedy, drama, and music) took New York and several Fringe Fests by storm, and is now in our own little organic back yard.

Boulder Burlesque is at it again, this time with a Kickstarter launch party for their audience-favorite show, Pussy Grabs Back! By popular demand (and political necessity), they want to take this show on the road, and the Kickstarter will help them do it. Come party, donate, bid on the auction, and enjoy performances Friday night to help them accomplish their goal!

It’s time again, for the Sundays at 2251 outdoor DJ jam over in the Goss/Grove area. This week is supposed to be International Sounds weekend, with a wide variety of musics piping across the parking lot, with dancing and more, so stop by and have a lovely summer time. Don’t forget your sunscreen.

Twisted Pine is hosting one of their Parties With a Purpose Saturday, too–this Saturday, the Purpose for the Party is Boulder Food Rescue. It’s always a good thing to sample Twisted Pine’s excellent beer, but when it’s for a good cause? Even better!

Don’t forget about  the Boulder Passport:  2017 Boulder Passport. This is ongoing all summer–it’s a great deal for slaking your July thirst at venues  all over Boulder.

Have fun this weekend, everyone!
