Bookworms Rejoice: Locally Owned Bookstores in Boulder

The best thing about reading is that it’s one of those activities that you can do year round. Sunny summer days? Take your book outside and soak up some knowledge and rays. Chilly winter nights? Make yourself a cup of hot cocoa or a hot toddy, wrap yourself in a massive blanket and settle in for a long reading session.

Luckily for all you Boulder bookworms, this city is chock full of locally owned bookstores. In the past, we covered all the bookstores on Pearl Street and that alone should keep you in books for quite a while, but I thought we would branch out a little and cover some of the stores a little further out.

The Bookworm

Located on 28th between Iris and Valmont, this is a great place to go for used books. In fact, they’re touted as Boulder’s largest used bookstore! They have a cute little café with free Wi-Fi so you can spend a few hours reading your newly purchased literature.

Innisfree Poetry Bookstore & Café

This bookstore is one of only three exclusively poetry bookstores in the U.S. It’s on University Hill, perfect for aspiring poets, and they not only offer books, they foster an entire community for poetry lovers and writers alike. They offer weekly poetry readings as well as music in their shop.

The Book Cellar

For a place a little further away from Downtown Boulder, try the Book Cellar in Old Town Louisville. Not only is the store wall to wall books, the surrounding coffee shops and restaurants make for the perfect little neighborhood to devour the books you just bought next door. They also offer store credit for your gently used books, so you can trade in your used books, save some money, and get some new stories to read.

Barbed Wire Books

On yet another Main Street in Boulder County, Barbed Wire Books is located in Longmont in the historic district. On top of books, the store is home to Barb Dwyer, the shop’s mascot/mannequin, who is constantly set up in a number of different themes that play out in the store window.

We mentioned our other article on Pearl Street Mall bookstores above, but I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention them. For more information, click on the link in the second paragraph of this article. Here are other great local bookstores in Boulder:

  • Red Letter Second Hand Books
  • Left Hand Books
  • Boulder Bookstore
  • Beat Book Shop
  • Trident Booksellers and Café

Now what are you waiting for? Get out there and buy a book! There’s no off-season for reading.
