Your Boulder’s 2016 Call for Contributors

your boulder contributors
Happy holidays, Boulder! We hope that you’re still enjoying all that is the holiday season with those you hold most dear.

That’s why we’re stopping by today to say that YOU are what WE hold most dear..

Our audience is the most important thing in the world to us — and in 2016, we’re looking to serve that audience even better and in more ways.

We’re looking for new contributors for 2016! Writers and photography enthusiasts, that means you.

We’re a self-funded community publication and while we flat-out don’t pay a ton, we do pay you for your time and efforts. You won’t get rich writing for us (even if you’re Stephen King), but you will score some walking around cash that’s enough to cover a few nice meals out with your family and friends, pay your Crossfit membership fee, or even keep your pups in doggie day care for a few days.

Here’s what we’re looking for and the details you need to know.

Editorial Contributors

We’re looking for stories that ARE Boulder. We’ve got enough coverage on the hiking, real estate, beer, and restaurant fronts and are looking for more social interest, politics, and wildlife. Maybe some family stuff, like parenting culture or school news. Have an idea? We’d love to hear it.

What we pay: Articles pay $40 for standard posts (up to 450 words max) and $50 for features (up to 700 words). We review our writers regularly and offer the opportunity to bump up $10 in each post class after a few successful posts.

What’s required: Submitting your pieces in either Google Doc or MS Word format 48 hours prior to publication. Our deadlines are strict. We publish Monday and Wednesday each week (our weekend roundup goes up on Friday and Jenn’s got that on lockdown).

All writing for us is done on a “work for hire” basis. That means we own the content you create and you can’t publish it anywhere else. You can certainly include us in portfolios with links (many of our writers do this) and we’ll always give you a reference (and we do this often)!

Want to pitch? Use our contact form to send us a message. Share with us some links where you’ve published your work before (even if it’s your own blog) and what you’d like to write about for us. It would help us a ton if you sent us 3 pitches for story ideas, including a headline and a 2-3 sentences about the topic.

Photography Contributors

We hate the phrase “for exposure.” That’s why we have 2 ways for you to share your images with YourBoulder.com: one gets you some walking round cash, one gets you exposure.

If you have an image you’d like shared on Your Boulder’s Facebook page, you can:

  • Send it to us on an exclusive for 3 days, provided it hasn’t been published anywhere else, for $20. This means Your Boulder gets an exclusive on it for three days and then all rights revert back to you. It’s a licensing fee.
  • Just get it out there, everywhere. Your Boulder won’t have an exclusive on it and you can share it anywhere. We’ll review the image and if we choose to share it, we’ll post it for the community’s enjoyment — but without compensation.

In either case, we’ll add photo credit with your name, a link to your website, Twitter account, Instagram, or anything else you’d like us to tag. And again, it’s not a lot of cash, but with as beautiful Boulder is, we’d like to help share your eye with the world — and if you choose, grab a bit of walking around cash while you’re at it.

Want to send us an image? You can message us directly on our Facebook page! Be sure to include the image.

We’ll reply back whether we’re interested in publishing it and make sure our terms are clear before we use your work — whether we’re paying for you or not. We’ll never (ever) share anything you created without your permission.

Important Notes for Potential Contributors

While it might seem odd that we have to say these things, we do:

  • We pay monthly, between the 5th and 10th of each month and via direct deposit. No “check’s in the mail” stuff.
  • We issue 1099s and need a W9 on file for all contributors. Yep. We’re legit.
  • We appreciate our contributors — writers always have a byline and bio linking to a site they choose, if they choose.

Our current contributors are amazing and this site wouldn’t be where it is today without Alli F., Lisa G., Tyra S., and Jenn Z. We also have to thank Deb. M. (on sabbatical) and Kelly T. — they were amazing and prolific contributors who helped the site grow in its earlier years (even earlier this year!) as well.

Perhaps you’ll join them in 2016 and help them share more of the awesome that is Boulder with the world!
