Boulder helped invent American craft beer. The Brewers Association is headquartered here, the state's first craft brewery was founded here in 1979, and for a while it felt like every warehouse east of Foothills had a mash tun in it. The scene has turned over hard since then, so here's the honest 2026 map: every brewery and taproom actually pouring in Boulder right now.
Avery Brewing
Avery left its cramped east Boulder warren in 2015 for a purpose-built campus at 4910 Nautilus Court in Gunbarrel, with more than 30 taps, a full restaurant, and a proper beer garden. It's the destination brewery of the county. Note it's closed Mondays.
Upslope Brewing
Two taprooms, two personalities. The original Lee Hill Road spot in north Boulder is small and neighborly; the Flatiron Park taproom on South Flatiron Court is the big one, with $5 pints Monday through Wednesday from 4 to 6pm. The craft lager and the pale ale in the green can remain trailhead currency.
Twisted Pine Brewing
Pouring at 3201 Walnut since 1995, Twisted Pine is now one of the elders of the scene, with 25-plus taps and food in the taproom. It survived the pandemic era that took so many of its neighbors, and the tap list still likes to experiment.
Mountain Sun & Southern Sun
The Mountain Sun on Pearl has been Boulder's hippie brewpub since 1993, and the Southern Sun covers Table Mesa with the same beer and the same happy chaos. House ales, famous burgers, and a no-rush attitude that hasn't changed in thirty years.
Boulder Social
When Boulder Beer, the state's original craft brewery, wound down in 2020, its founders' story came full circle: Frank and Gina Day, who also founded the old Walnut Brewery, opened Boulder Social at 38th and Arapahoe with a ten-barrel brewhouse. It's now the exclusive local home of the revived Boulder Beer brands, so you can still order a Buffalo Gold in its hometown.
Pattern Break Brewing
The newest chapter in a familiar space: when Sanitas Brewing closed in December 2025, co-founder Michael Memsic reopened the Frontier Avenue taproom in May 2026 as Pattern Break, with a smashburger truck outside, non-alcoholic drafts on the board, and the same big patio, now tented for winter.
Vision Quest Brewery
Boulder's garage-band brewery at 2510 47th Street keeps the nano spirit alive: experimental small batches, a food truck out front, and live music or open mic most weeks. This is what the whole east Boulder scene used to feel like.
MainStage Brewing, Gunbarrel
Lyons' MainStage Brewing moved its production and canning into Gunbarrel in 2025, taking over the old Beyond the Mountain space on Longbow Drive and bringing its live-music-forward taproom with it.
Asher Brewing
Colorado's all-organic brewery has been quietly pouring in Gunbarrel since 2009 at 4699 Nautilus Court. Green Bullet IPA remains the calling card.
The supporting cast
BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse on 28th covers the chain brewpub niche. The Post Chicken & Beer downtown pours Post Brewing's lagers next to Colorado's best fried chicken. And Rayback Collective on Valmont isn't a brewery at all, but with thirty taps and a nightly food truck lineup it might be the best place in town to drink everyone else's beer.
Gone, not forgotten
The turnover has been brutal: Boulder Beer's brewpub closed in 2020 after 41 years, West Flanders left Pearl Street in 2021, FATE went dark in 2019, the Walnut Brewery poured its last in 2017, and Bru, Wild Woods, Vindication, J Wells, Finkel & Garf's taproom, and Sanitas have all followed. If you drank at any of them, congratulations: you're officially a Boulder old-timer. Raise whatever's in your glass.
