Autumn here is short and it moves fast, so timing matters more than it does in July. This is the local playbook for fall 2026, from when the leaves actually turn to the events that are confirmed on the calendar (and the couple that aren't).
When and where the leaves turn
Color moves down the mountain over several weeks. High-country aspens above 9,000 feet start turning in early September. The mid-elevations between roughly 7,500 and 9,000 feet peak mid-to-late September. The foothills and town itself come last, hitting their best early-to-mid October. If you only get out once, aim for that lower window.
In Boulder proper, Visit Boulder pegs the color as best from about September 27 through October 25, with the very best stretch October 5 to 20. Two in-town spots get called out every year: the tree canopy on Mapleton Hill and the loop around Wonderland Lake. Longs Peak usually takes its first snow around mid-October, and once that happens the gold-against-white backdrops get almost unfair.
The scenic drives
The classic is the Peak to Peak Highway, a 55-mile run from Nederland to Estes Park along CO-119, 72, and 7. It was Colorado's first designated scenic byway, back in 1918, and Visit Boulder recommends mid-to-late September for the aspens up there. Closer in, Flagstaff Road switchbacks up Flagstaff Mountain to Panorama Point, where you get the whole valley framed in color without leaving town for long.
If Brainard Lake is on your list, read this part carefully. Timed-entry reservations are required June 12 through October 1, 2026, and they run through recreation.gov only ($16 per vehicle, $9 per motorcycle, plus a $2 nonrefundable reservation fee per ticket). After October 1 you can drive in without a reservation, but services wind down quickly once the season closes, so a late-October leaf trip means fewer amenities up there. The Gateway Trailhead stays open year-round with no reservation at $10 if you want the low-hassle option.
The fall hikes
You do not have to drive far to walk through the color. Mount Sanitas is the in-town workhorse: a roughly 3-mile loop that starts practically downtown, with aspens and scrub oak going bright yellow and orange, and a summit that hands you the whole Boulder Valley and a slice of the Divide. Royal Arch at Chautauqua is 3.5 miles round trip and climbs to a red rock arch that frames the golden leaves about as well as any view in the county.
For fewer people, Gregory Canyon sits just west of Chautauqua and climbs toward Flagstaff Road through tunnels of cottonwood and maple. And if you're bringing kids or want an easy day, the Hessie Trailhead near Eldora is the pick: a creek, a waterfall, and some of the biggest aspen stands around. Pumpkins, mazes, and apples
Munson Farms is the in-town classic. The stand sits at 7355 Valmont Road in Boulder, and the pumpkin patch and winter squash run from mid-September until October 31. You get pick-your-own pumpkins, wheelbarrow fills, a free corn maze, and free admission. It's the low-key, no-ticket option, and it delivers.
Cottonwood Farms runs its fall festival September 23 through October 31, daily from 10am to 6pm. One thing to know: despite the Boulder branding, it's actually at 10600 Isabelle Road in Lafayette. General admission is $10.50 for ages 6 to 64, and kids under 5 plus seniors 65 and up get in free. You'll find a hand-cut two-acre corn maze, a kids' maze, farm animals, and $5 weekend wagon rides. They recommend prepaying admission.
Anderson Farms in Erie is the big production. Its fall festival also runs September 23 through October 31, 2026, at 6728 County Road 3¼. The 25-acre corn maze is Colorado's longest-running, and there's a pumpkin patch, wagon rides, and the Terror in the Corn haunt after dark. Admission runs roughly $17 to $27 on weekdays and $28 to $38 on weekends, with kids 3 and under free.
For apples, Ya Ya Farm & Orchard in Longmont (6914 Ute Highway) is the spot, with one honest warning: the u-pick apple reservations require booking ahead and typically sell out by August. So don't count on picking. Instead, aim for the farm stand, which runs August through November (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9 to 3; Thursday 9 to 6; Saturday and Sunday 9 to 4; closed Monday) with no admission fee. The cider donuts and pies are the reason to go. AppleFest tickets for 2026 are on sale, and the farm hosts a BOOFest with pumpkin painting on October 31, 2026.
Buffs football at Folsom
Deion Sanders enters his fourth season at Colorado, and after a 3-and-9 2025 and surgery that same year, he's publicly saying he's healthy and chasing a bounce-back. There are six home Saturdays plus one Friday night at Folsom Field this fall. Here's the slate:
- Weber State: Saturday, September 12
- Texas Tech: Saturday, October 3 (homecoming, moved to this date)
- Utah: Saturday, October 17
- Kansas State: Saturday, October 31
- Houston: Friday, November 13, 8:15pm on ESPN

Pay attention to the Houston game. The Big 12 moved it from Saturday the 14th to Friday the 13th, and plenty of aggregator sites still show the old date. If you're planning around it, trust November 13. Note too that the Kansas State game lands on October 31, the same day as Halloween on Pearl Street, so downtown will be busy on two fronts.
The events that are actually confirmed
The Munchkin Masquerade runs Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 3 to 6pm on Pearl Street, with more than a hundred downtown businesses handing candy to costumed kids 12 and under. The Boulder Farmers Market's Saturday edition runs April 4 through November 21, 2026, from 8am to 2pm on 13th Street between Arapahoe and Canyon; the Wednesday market wraps earlier, on October 7. If you miss the outdoor season, the Winter Market lands December 5 and 6 at the Boulder County Fairgrounds.
Pumpkin Pie Days sounds like a food event but isn't. It's the St. Vrain Historical Society's vintage and antique market, held October 10 and 11, 2026, at the Boulder County Fairgrounds Exhibit Building (9595 Nelson Road, Longmont). Admission is $11, or $10 cash, with kids under 12 free; hours are Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 11 to 4. It's the 56th year of the market.
