Boulder gives you more than one option when the kitchen table stops working. The five places to study in Boulder below cover different conditions: quiet work in a public library or a study room, background cafe activity at Trident or the Laughing Goat, and casual group work at Rayback, where a scheduled event can change what the space is like.
One note before you go. Wi-Fi speed, outlet access, and a quiet seat vary at the private cafes here, so confirm current Wi-Fi, outlet, and laptop policies with the venue, show up with a charged battery, and carry something you can work on offline if the room is full.

Boulder Public Library, Main Branch
The Main Library is at 1001 Arapahoe Avenue. Hours run Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Check the Main Library location page before a holiday week rather than trusting a table you read months ago.
Study rooms are the reason a lot of people come here. They're free, and you can either drop in or reserve one through the meeting and study room rules. A few things worth knowing:
- Reservations are capped at two hours per day.
- You can book up to three weeks ahead.
- Show up more than 15 minutes late and the slot you reserved is forfeited.
The library also provides computers and wireless internet if you'd rather not haul a laptop. Parking takes a little attention: the public lots have time and payment rules, and the library's own page directs you to a public parking garage if you're staying longer than three hours, so the time-limited surface lots are the ones to skip for a long session.
Reynolds Library
Reynolds sits at 3595 Table Mesa Drive in south Boulder and publishes the same schedule as Main: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free here, which is the practical difference for a lot of people. Trident Booksellers and Cafe
Trident is at 940 Pearl Street, an independent bookshop and cafe established in 1980. It is employee-owned today. Books, tea, coffee, and events. It's open Saturday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The late Friday close is useful if your work happens after dinner. See the Trident site for events, since a scheduled event changes what the room sounds like.
Laughing Goat, Pearl Street
The Pearl location is at 1709 Pearl Street, open 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. That early open makes it a reasonable morning stop, and hours are posted on the Laughing Goat Pearl page. There's also a Norlin branch at 1720 Pleasant Street, which keeps limited scheduled hours. Check its currently published hours on that page before you plan a session around it.
Rayback Collective
Rayback is at 2775 Valmont Road: coffee, food trucks, a taphouse, and a regular event calendar. Weekdays it opens at 8 a.m. and weekends at 10 a.m. Monday and Sunday it closes at 8 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday at 10 p.m. Seating is first come, first served, with no reservations. There's a west entrance off the Goose Creek multi-use path if you're walking or riding in. The operator notes that schedules change for special events, which is worth a look at the Rayback site before you commit an evening to group work.
When you'd rather read outside
Not every session needs power and a signal. If what's in front of you is a book, a printout, or notes you've already downloaded, an outdoor bench does the job as well as any of the five venues above, and it costs nothing.
