Art and Hobbies

Boulder is a very artistic place to live. We’re so chock full of artists who work in all kinds of media that you can’t toss a craft beer in any direction without hitting a stunning statue, brilliantly beautiful building, or marvelous mural (let alone the myriad galleries and museums that showcase all the visual art Boulder has to offer). From Mike’s Camera to the Dairy Center to The Museum of Boulder (and so much more), Boulder is home to some of the top places to find the best in the realm of visual, musical, performing, literary, and many more arts. Not only do we house the pros here in Boulder, but if you live here and have an artistic hobby (or maybe a professional artistic side hustle), the businesses in Boulder are ready to help you find what you need for any supply or promotion for arts and hobbies in Boulder.

Boulder: an artistic community

Support and celebration for arts and hobbies in Boulder are all over town, and not just during Boulder arts week (Which normally happens in April). Every week is Arts and Hobbies Week in Boulder. We’ve got almost a gallery or art museum or performance space on every corner, and if you’ve seen any of Your Boulder’s weekend articles, you’ll see just how much live music we’ve got playing any given day (spoiler alert: it ain’t just the weekends). Open Studios is another event that celebrates the visual arts and hobbies in Boulder, each October. Download or snag a paper version of the Open Studios map, and you can make an entire weekend of going around to multitudes of artists’ working studios, to see just how they do their thing, and can buy some of their work as well. In recent years, Open Studios has expanded to three weekends instead of the inaugural one.

Lots of Arts & Hobbies in Boulder

Visual Arts: If you’re looking to buy supplies, or the finished art of other Boulder artists, there are multiple businesses in Boulder where you can do so. Find the perfect brush or pigment at Guiry’s or the old local Boulder favorite, McGuckin Hardware, or the art-centered thrift store, Art Parts, you’ve got everything you need for whatever visual arts medium you’re working in. And if you’re looking to buy, there are coops and galleries galore where finished art is always for sale. Galleries & Museums: From Art Mart, which is more of a gift shop style gallery where artists rent their display spaces, to R Gallerie, which is more of a high end gallery experience, to museums like BMoCA and the Museum of Boulder, we’ve got all kinds of places to display the visual arts that make Boulder so beautiful. And don’t get us started on the public art in the parks and murals everywhichwhere… Music: Beyond the plethora of live music playing every day in cool places like Laughing Goat and Caffe Sole, there are a wide range of places to learn how to play or sing, from rock n roll camps to opera. Dance: Any kind of dance you can think of, you’ll find in Boulder: We’ve got some of the premiere dance companies in more than one genre, aerial dance and ballet being only two of them. Not only can you witness stellar performances, but you can take lessons with these incredibly talented folks, anytime. Theatre: Besides one of the largest and highest quality Shakespeare festivals in the country (the Colorado Shakespeare Festival), but we boast several theatre companies producing some of the best and most cutting edge theatre companies around, like: Local, Boulder Ensemble, and the Band of Toughs. Mainstream musicals more your speed? The Boulder Dinner Theatre has been on top of that for decades. And let’s not forget that CU Boulder has both top dance and theatre (and music) departments, so even if you go watch some student work, you’ll be sure to have an awesome theatrical experience. Other: Literature (esp. poetry): Boulder was the home for many of the famous Beat poets, and the current poetry scene (as well as the robust writing department at Naropa) still carries on that tradition, in spades. Tattoos:what better canvas for excellent art than your own skin? Boulder’s got an excellent tattoo studio on almost every corner; you really can’t go wrong.
