NIELSEN DESIGN is a small architectural firm specializing in buildings that are distinct in design and sustainably built. We achieve this by working with clients and builders that have a passion for modern design and green building practice.
Our design is informed by international imagery and grounded in regional integrity. We strive for solutions that comment on the moment and the place. Our building forms are site specific and seamlessly integrated with current building practice and green technology. As a result, we create cutting edge buildings, which happen to be green.
Past and current projects are rooted in energy efficiency. Our building practice involves site analysis, super insulated building envelopes, passive solar design for heat gain, thermal mass, high efficiency appliances and equipment, as well as solar thermal and solar electric technology. Our most recent projects have been net zero energy and have received LEED for Homes Platinum certification.
Our firm is small and professional. We work with an outstanding team of strategic partners and consultants. Our relationships with our engineers and builders are very important to our process and to our success. Whether the project is small or large we have the experience and team to accomplish the task. Our clients can always count on excellent attention to their project and to their specific needs. We can provide excellent client references for every project we have been involved with.
We are excited to be doing what we are doing. Architecture is our passion, and building green is gratifying. We believe that most people want to live in and interact with buildings that represent their own unique personalities.
Which is why we don’t hire by profession. We hire interesting people. People who look at their job by looking at life, bringing with them a life of experiences to base their craft on. It’s a fundamentally different way of thinking. One that is at the core of our culture.
We are the people who ask the really hard questions. Followed by the painfully obvious ones. We talk, listen, observe, dig, dive, and mine until we fully understand the intricacies of the project. We immerse ourselves into the lives that everyday people will be leading, holding a mirror to culture and taking detailed notes of the reactions. Because it’s not what we know; it’s what we notice.
Somewhere, the most authentic expression of a project is waiting to be discovered. All of this preparation, from the trenches to the ten thousand foot view, culminates in one idea. A story that people can’t help but connect with. One common thread weaving seamlessly through the spaces we create. It’s not about what the project will look like. It’s about what it has to be.
We craft the spaces that people spend their days and nights in. Spend their time and money in. Spend their little wins and heartbreaking losses in. Give them a moment, and they’ll give you their trust. It’s the moments that matter. Everything else is just design.
May Yin Architecture practices what we call Total Integration, focusing on the details. Every component and subcomponent of our buildings is engineered and detailed with its fabrication and installation precisely specified. Energy modeling is performed for the entire building and each separate space, thus heating and cooling ar consistent, efficient and comfortable. Plumbing, ventilation and structure are coordinated, elements that should be invisible are invisible. Total Integration ensures optimal performance, durability and economy that May Yin Architecture packages handsomely.
J Logan Architects has a long-standing reputation for designing public and private buildings that combine a strong sense of craftsmanship with energy responsible design. In light of the overwhelming evidence of global climate change the firm now focuses exclusively on buildings with very low carbon emissions. These featured projects reflect those values.
Residences, community projects and commercial buildings alike are designed as part of a collaborative process between site and form, interior and exterior, and client and architect. First the essential elements of the site are distilled from the point of view of the client and the spaces are established around those connections. Building forms then arise followed by the selection of materials and state-of-the-art green technologies that make the most sense for a specific project.
Paramount to every design is an ecological and environmental awareness that can include the pursuit of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Whether pursuing certification or not J Logan Architects believes in and utilizes the practices of the Green Building Rating System.
With an overall emphasis on the personal experience J Logan Architects seeks to keep clients as involved as possible from the initial design phase through to the building’s conclusion. Experience has proven that clients who participate in every aspect of their project are likely to be the most satisfied with the end results.

Michael Silbert received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee in 1981 and his license to practice architecture in Colorado in 1986 after working for a Boulder firm for the previous four years. He started his Sole Proprietorship that year working from an office in his home. Michael Silbert, Architect is located in the Boulder foothills at 56 Antler Drive. He is a “Green Advantage” certified residential environmental practitioner and a member of the “Colorado Green Building Guild”.
As a Boulder architect, Michael has experience in commercial projects and multi-family but has mostly focused on single family, new homes and renovations lately. He has designed on mountain lots and plains lots and his portfolio spans numerous styles. Most of his work has been along the Front Range from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins and in the Vail Valley.
As a Sole Proprietor, Michael carries the full responsibility for the designs through all of the design phases: schematic, preliminary, design development, and construction documents. All phases of the design are also hand drawn which adds a personal touch and leads to a more intimate knowledge of every detail of the structure. Speaking of structure, Michael typically draws all of the structural plans as well, coordinating with the structural engineer, in order to maintain better quality control. General contractors really appreciate this extra attention paid to the drawings, the deep understanding of how the building is to be constructed and how this is conveyed on the drawings. This also allows Michael to keep a keen eye on the budget, which is of utmost importance on most every project.
The best way to understand Michael’s approach to the design process is to read up on his Design Philosophy and then take a peek at the many testimonials he has received from satisfied clients.
There’s a reason his business has been built and sustained by client referrals. Excellent service and attention to detail are an integral part of Michael’s brilliant designs.
