The Firefly Handmade Market is one of the most popular go-to craft festivals Boulderites flock to each time it arrives to our fair city. And that’s saying something–for a city and county that’s known for its great love for its plethora of outdoor festivals, even those specifically centered around the arts, the fact that Firefly is still going strong after almost an entire decade is something to be proud of.
Born of a desire to celebrate the rough edges of the handmade in the face of today’s over-commodified world, Firefly first began in 2010, where its collective of founders brought “the intersection of craft, local, and small batch” to Boulder consumers, and since then they’ve become the largest handmade-only market not only in Boulder, but on the Front Range. Impressive stuff.
The next Boulder Firefly Handmade is popping up in the Trader Joe’s parking lot, near the 29th Street Mall this weekend, Boulder–so you’ll definitely want to make it part of your weekend plans. Here’s what you can expect at this upcoming Firefly:
More than 100 artisans
So very many independent artisans both local and from all over the place will grace the Boulder Firefly array of wares this weekend! Any art or craft you can think of that you’d want to shop for, you’ll find here, and then some.
- Clothes: handmade fashions for men, women, and children will make your look unique.
- Home Goods & Furnishings: visual arts to adorn your wall, ceramics to fill with anything at all, candles or lamps to illuminate your home, and much much more.
- Stuff For Your Pets: from dog treats to custom accessories, your pets will thank you for going to Firefly.
- For Your Kids: Clothes, accessories, and maker spaces make Firefly a family friendly center of fun.
Speaking of kids:
Junior Market (Saturday only!)
This Saturday of the Firefly market will boast a mini-market-within-the-market that’s all manned by junior and teen artisans! How cool is that? Just as carefully curated as the adult artists, the Junior/Teen Firefly will offer you all sorts of arts and crafts products that will make your jaw drop, wondering how these kids could possibly be so talented…
Tinker Art Studio, the folks that are sponsoring the Junior/Teen market, will have maker spaces and activity centers right there in the main Market for all your aspiring kid artists’ creative desires. These areas, like the Market itself, are completely free to attend. The whole market is kid- and pet-friendly. Too, so if you were at your wits’ end to think of something colorful and fun to do with the whole family, you’d do worse than to bring them along to this free event that only happens here once a season or so.
Not only will live music regale you as you stroll around the hundreds of artists’ corners gazing at all their splendor, but several of these artists will have live demos going on, Open-Studios style, so you can see exactly how they manage to create their things of beauty right in front of your eyes. So you can not only buy the most unique gifts for your loved ones that you’re likely to find anywhere, but you’ll get an inside look at just how these amazing things are done.
Food & Drink
All this shopping and making and admiring of artistic prowess is sure to make any art lover hungry and thirsty, and Firefly Handmade has you covered in that area, too. Food trucks will surround the area for all your noshing and nibbling needs, of any stripe of food you can think of. And don’t forget–several of the artisans will be offering up their food crafts, too–unusual hot sauces, local honey purveyors, and even our own Vapor Distillery will be there offering up their delicious craft concoctions to sell.
All in all, this is one Boulder outdoor festival you do not want to miss. Come for the art ogling, stay for the food trucks and the marketplace. What are you looking forward to finding most at this weekend’s Firefly? Let us know in the comments.
