It’s funny, that Memorial Day weekend is here, isn’t it, Boulder? I just mean that it’s all feeling like one long weekend these days. Or maybe it feels like an eternal week, with no weekend respite? Maybe some of both?
Did you see that there was a moose hanging out in Columbia cemetery (up on 9th street) the other day? It’s news because, well: cute wildlife! But it’s also worth noting, because moose usually don’t come this low down out of the mountains. It’s still unclear why she was hanging out there, but hey. I used to, when I went to Boulder High. It’s a beautiful place to chill in the shade.
Speaking of Boulder high schoolers, the Daily Camera reported recently that there was a huge group of Boulder youngsters, way more than 10 of them, closer than 6 feet apart, and unmasked for the most part. C‘mon, Boulder, let’s not go crazy, or we’ll be locked down again, and then we really will go crazy…
Anyway: Here are the biggest biggies of the socially safe events happening in and near Boulder this holiday weekend:
All Terrain Landscaping
Since we’re spending more time than ever in our own backyards, All Terrain Landscaping has compiled 5 Outdoor Kitchen Ideas for Yards Large & Small.
Outdoor living spaces, particularly kitchens, are becoming increasingly popular among Americans as seen in the increase in the value of homes with these outdoor features. While adding monetary value to your home is a great reason to add an outdoor kitchen area, the main value of an outdoor kitchen comes from its entertainment and functional value. Outdoor kitchens serve as a place where friends and family can gather and enjoy being outside. Whether you have acres of space or a small urban patio, here are five outdoor kitchen ideas we know you’ll love: https://atpslandscaping.com/outdoor-kitchen-ideas/

Facing the Dark
Stories With Spirit is dynamic duo Cooper Braun and Rachel Ann Harding, and they’ve been storytelling locally for many years, everywhere from the Boulder Fringe festival to Savory Spice shop, to distilleries in Longmont. They’ve got a roster of beautifully told, gripping stories for any theme and any occasion, and they always give a wonderful and a gripping performance. This time, the stories are themed around facing the dark forces around us and emerging victorious. The stories slated for this show are a bit heavy, and also PG-13, so be advised—story time with your bouncing toddler, this is not.
Dance Party at Deviant Spirits Distillery
Deviant Spirits is at it again—also on Friday, the good folks at DV8 are hosting another virtual dance party! Hop on to Facebook live at 7, or you can catch it on Twitch or YouTube, to cut your own living room rug to the stylings of DJs Demetrius and Mike Lato. Let’s virtually boogie!
The bookstore side of Trident Cafe is officially open, Boulder! Now you may have heard about Trident’s awesome mystery book bags, and the fact that they have a dynamite curbside system already going on, but the news is that they’ve opened their bookstore, with safety measures firmly in place, natch.
The other cool thing about this development? The Trident bookstore is selling beer and wine, along with their already famously stellar coffees and high end teas. So that’s something to celebrate—a Boulder institution is coming back to life!
Rising Tide Tattoo
With the opening of some non-essential businesses now that Boulder is in Safer at Home mode, Rising Tide tattoo shop is one of those that have chosen to open with full service. These artists are the best in Boulder (literally—they’ve been voted first place in the Best of Boulder awards the past few years), and they have opened their doors back up to their faithful clientele. They have added several more safety measures in order to keep things safe and healthy and abiding by the state rules, and they’re already bursting with business. Give them a call and make your appointment soon, as they’re not doing walk-ins anymore, at least during the pandemic.
That Time of Year: Boulder’s Farmers Market
You might think that the crowded madhouse that is the Boulder Farmers Market would not be opening this weekend, with all this pandemic stuff going on. But you’d be wrong!
Boulder’s Farmers Market is indeed opening up this weekend, as usual. Not as usual, though, in that they will have a staggered opening, safe distancing precautions in place, online pre-ordering and quick trips encouraged, masks required, and of course there won’t be the live music or the dining areas this time. But what a treat it is, that we still get to support our local farmers and producers, and get to eat amazing, fresh, local foods while we’re at it!
