When I first heard the term “yoga retreat,” I imagined a dozen or so practiced yogis holding headstands for 15 minutes on a sandy, beautiful beach somewhere that I can’t even locate on a map. What didn’t cross my mind was the idea that a retreat doesn’t always have to be far from home, or even outside of Boulder.
Jenna Bee just held her third Retreat at Home here in Boulder. The program not only allowed attendees to continue with their daily lives after each class, but inspired each yogi to explore, reach, and grow inside the studio and out. The first session began on a Monday evening without any physical activity — just a simple meet and greet to introduce yogi to yogi and prepare for six days of ongoing yoga practice. The following morning at 7 a.m. the yogis arrived ready for the first class of the week.
Throughout the next six days, Jenna guided the class through meditations, downward-facing dogs, sun salutations, warriors, and dozens of other poses that tested strength, stamina, and mental energy. But as Jenna mentioned in the second class, “Yoga isn’t about getting strong — you’re already strong. Yoga is about finding that strength.” Every yogi found their strength — and discovered even more they didn’t know they had.
The idea behind Jenna’s Retreat at Home was born after teaching on a picturesque yoga retreat in Tulum, Mexico. An inspiring and forward-thinking instructor, Jenna’s wheels started turning and before she knew it, the first Retreat at Home was scheduled.
Each session combines the exclusive elements of a retreat — extended classes, personalized instruction, meditation and journal keeping — with normal, day-to-day yoga practice. The at-home retreat takes place first thing in the morning, with each class lasting an hour and a half.
