I’m of the mind that there is no food that screams summertime quite like a hot dog. I bet just the mention of a nice, slightly charred hot dog straight off the grill on a sunny summer day kicks your cravings into high gear. From quick grab and go food carts to local restaurants and more, Boulder has no shortage of opportunities to enjoy a good hot dog, bratwurst, or sausage this summer.

In honor of this timeless summertime food (not to mention that July is National Hot Dog Month!) here are some classic local spots to visit to curb that hunger for a hot dog.

Mustard’s Last Stand

A staple on Broadway for nearly 40 years, Mustard’s Last Stand has long brought the character, quirks, and flavors of the quintessential Chicago hot dog stand to life here in Boulder. From classic Chicago-style hot dogs to Polish sausages to menu items with a Colorado twist (as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options), Mustard’s Last Stand is a Boulder mainstay that holds pride in its local ingredients and is focused on promoting fellow small local businesses.

Bohemian Biergarten

On 13th Street in Downtown Boulder between Pearl and Spruce, the Bohemian Biergarten is a Gastropub focused on providing their guests with great beer, hearty comfort food, and a welcoming, fun, beer hall-style environment. With roots in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Central Europe, the menu boasts no shortage of items sure to satisfy your hot dog and sausage craving, from the Bohemian Style Hot Dog to the Pretzel Sausage and ample traditional and specialty sausage plates.

Hot Dog Carts

For those hungry for a hot dog after a day of perusing Pearl Street Mall, there are multiple places right on the walking mall where you can grab a quick and delicious bite.

Freddie’s Hot Dogs is a food cart on the 1100 block of Pearl Street Mall that has been serving up hot dogs, brats, Polish sausages, turkey dogs, veggie dogs, and even elk and buffalo brats for decades.

On the 1300 block of Pearl Street Mall you’ll find Fast Eddie’s World Famous Chicago Hot Dogs, another mainstay food cart originally created by legendary and loved Boulder character Eddie Ermoian, who passed away in June 2017. The hot dog cart is still in operation and keeping Eddie’s legend alive with its purist approach to Chicago-style hot dogs, as is Fast Eddie’s Wieners, ‘Wiches & Wings on University Hill, which opened in October 2015.

Boulder Sausage

Looking for local products to throw on the grill at your own summer cookout? The roots of local company Boulder Sausage go back over 50 years, beginning as a small meat and cheese market and eventually growing into the quality and community focused company it is today. Products range from classic Italian Sausage, traditional Bratwursts, and German Brand Sausage to unique and creative recipes, such as the Cranberry Orange Breakfast Sausage, Beer Bratwurst, Hatch Green Chili Bratwurst, and more. Boulder Sausage is a huge proponent of both transparency in ingredients and giving back to the community, and their products can be ordered online or found at local grocery stores.
