I always use the phrase, “I gave it up for Lent.” I’m usually talking about something like sea urchin or Tea Party Republicans, but it’s true nonetheless.
If you’re of the ilk to celebrate the Easter season (or just a big fan of drinking-related holidays where women trade glimpses for shiny, beer-soaked beads made in China), today is Mardi Gras. If you’re looking for a place to grab a slice of King Cake or just some southern comfort, here are a few ideas around town to celebrate Mardi Gras in Boulder:
Mardi Gras at Jax Fish House: Seriously – get your pre-Lent binge on here. Shrimp etoufée, fried catfish, king cake, barrel-aged Vieux Carre, Hurricanes, and Sazerac make up their special menu for the day. Just walk down Pearl and stumble home. Beads optional.
Carnival at Centro Latin Kitchen: From 8-11pm tonight, you can celebrate Mardi Gras with the fine folks at Centro. They’ve had quite the Carnival celebration going on and tonight, it’s live music from Selasee and some gluten-free cheese rolls so you can ditch that pre-Lent gluten guilt even if you’re not really gluten-intolerant or bonafide Celiac.
Carnival at Aji: Head on down to the other end of Pearl and get your Carnival on at Aji. There’s a special party going on this evening just for the day of Mardi Gras. For $20 per person, you’ll score a drink ticket for a Leblon cocktail and complimentary passed appetizers. They’ll also have a DJ, some fun masks, and (yikes) glitter. I wouldn’t wear anything you can’t throw away — you know how glitter goes. The party runs from 7-9:30PM.
