If you’re new to Boulder and ready to enjoy the outdoor wonderland that’s waiting, you’ll need a guide that lets you know where to get outfitted. There are plenty of outdoor retailers on the historic Pearl Street Mall, and we’re here to give you a primer to get you around and geared-up for outdoor adventure.
Perhaps the two most well-known outdoor retailers in Boulder are Neptune Mountaineering and REI. Neptune Mountaineering is in South Boulder, located off of Table Mesa and Broadway. Neptune has been a Boulder mainstay since opening its doors in 1973, long before REI ever came onto the scene. Here, you can find everything from rock, ice, and alpine climbing supplies to camping gear and technical clothing. They also host a wide variety of outdoor specialists for talks and slide shows throughout the year.
The Boulder REI location is small and one level, but probably more well-equipped than many of REI’s smaller stores on account of the number and technical knowledge of outdoor enthusiasts in Boulder. Boulder’s REI is located on 28th Street between Pearl Street and Canyon Boulevard on the west side of the street (same parking lot as Marshalls).
Over on the Pearl Street Mall, you’ll find many more specialty outdoor retailers. For an interactive map of where to find each of these stores, try Downtown Boulder’s interactive shopping map for apparel.
