Sushi Zanmai: Rock Out With Your Chopsticks Out

Just after I moved to Boulder, I got set up on a blind date. He said, “Hey — let’s meet at Sushi Zamnai!” and as a girl always game for some fresh dead fish, tempura, or the like, I gave the gesture two thumbs-up.

Having lived in Japan for well over a year, I’m an admitted sushi snob. I like my sushi bar chefs friendly, my hot towels hot, and the ability to throw a what do YOU recommend? over the counter and have it result in nothing short of WOW. I wasn’t disappointed when I walked into Sushi Zanmai. In fact, I haven’t had a disappointing experience there ever.

First, this isn’t your go-to location for cheap sushi. It’s moderately priced and completely in-line with the value you receive. And by value, I mean delicious Japanese fare. The fish is always fresh and never fishy. The service is minimalist — which means you won’t have a waiter breathing down your next with every scoop of your chopsticks. And the signature rolls are, hands-down, some of the best I’ve had in moderate-priced Colorado sushi joints. Vegetarians will love the Green Hornet roll. The eel (unagi) sushi is always a standby favorite. My favorite creations, however, are the nightly specials they create with fresh, seasonal fare and completely at the chef’s whim. Ask and be delighted.

And I did mention something about rocking and chopsticks, didn’t I? Well, if you’re Stevie Nicks (IN YOUR MIND) in the making and love a good karaoke experience, Sushi Zanmai is your place. Every Saturday from 10PM until midnight, you can rock out with your chopsticks and closest friends at Sushi Zanmai for karaoke. Depending on how much sake you or the other “contestants” have had, you’ll either laugh or find yourself crying the next day. Whichever way it turns out — it’s fun. Saturday nights are standing-room-only here. Come for dinner, stay for singing. Or howling. Whichever.

If you’re wondering, the guy didn’t work out. But my love for Sushi Zanmai blossomed that night back in 2012!
