Where can you find good Boulder BBQ?
Alabama natives and barbeque aficionados Ben Gilbert, Mike Fernandez, and Jeff Kennedy had a dream of opening the best barbecue restaurant this side of the Mississippi. With their love of the fresh mountain air and BBQ-scented dreams, the trio found themselves in Vail, Colorado. Equipped with secret sauce recipes and a southern work ethic, Moe’s Original Bar B Que was born.
Before long they grew from a double-wide trailer to opening locations in seven (soon to be nine) different states. With their growing popularity capturing the taste buds of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder, Colorado became the next community to host Moe’s.
And with the help of Mike Shelly and his team, the store opened in January of 2012, making it the ninth Moe’s Original BBQ in Colorado alone.
Some Good Grub
For those unfamiliar with “hog” delicacy, BBQ has many preparations and spices. Moe’s captures the Alabama style of BBQ which lies in between the Memphis and Carolina style of spices and dishes. In other words, they like to throw a sweet pickle and some coleslaw on top of your pulled-pork BBQ sandwich. Unlike other BBQ joints, Moe’s Original Bar B Que smokes all their meats fresh daily with a unique mixture of cherry-wood and apple-wood fire for locked flavor. This savory technique allows the BBQ flavor to come through even before you add one of their delicious BBQ sauces. Hankerin’ (just go with it) for some Southern style side dishes? You’ll be whistling Dixie by the second bite of greens and beans. Also, desserts are made from scratch with recipes passed down for generations, unlike their city-slicker counterparts.
This joint has truly found its place in the hearts of Boulder BBQ fans. If you check Moe’s Facebook page, you’ll see tons of Boulder folk raving about the southern style pork, chicken wings, sausages, catfish, beef, shrimp and even some exotic animal native to Boulder called tofu (no there really isn’t an animal named tofu, that’s just your medical marijuana talking). To top it all off they serve it with some good ol’ fashioned cornbread, baked beans, potato salad, and coleslaw. If the buttons on your pants haven’t popped off after your third helping, try some of their famous banana puddin’ with cool whip. It’ll have you leaving for a new pair of Levi’s and talking like the “Dukes of Hazard.”
Conveniently located on the corner of Baseline and 30th Street, Boulder’s Moe’s Original Bar B Que is just a stone’s throw away for CU students and families alike looking for some southern comfort. The restaurant comes complete with a concrete bar stocked with whiskey and local craft beers. And to keep up with the Boulder spirit they even use the empty whiskey bottles as vessels for their famous homemade red BBQ sauce.
