Well — that was quite a snow we had! Check out our Facebook page for some amazing photos shared by your fellow Boulderites, showing how they spent Tuesday’s snow day.
We Boulderites are an active bunch. Cold weather and even snow don’t slow us down in the least–in fact, some of us are most socially and otherwise active in late winter and early spring. Here are five popular and interesting things to do in Boulder during this time of the year:
Snowshoeing / snow hiking
A snowy day in Boulder doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not beautiful outside. On the contrary: it can be a sunny, balmy day and yet a snowy one at the same time. Sure, anyone can ski at nearby resorts even this late in the season (especially cross-country skiing is perfect for this time of year), but the more leisurely pace of walking allows for more thorough appreciation for the beautiful scenery, whether it’s urban hiking downtown or a snowshoe trail higher up.
A simple stroll up Bluebell trail can be just the thing, and why not end with a gourmet bite at Chautauqua dining hall? For the more serious snowshoer, nearby Betasso Preserve, Bald or Rabbit Mountains have ample all-purpose trails, and Rabbit Mountain even has some suggested winter birding areas.

Stout sampling
Stout Month has just begun, and in Boulder, it’s one of the bigger holidays around. Mountain Sun pubs are the crux of the dark beer celebrations, with a new stout tapped every Tuesday and a culmination in the famous Chops Competition at the end of the month. Other breweries have jumped on the Stout Month bandwagon too, however, and many of them even have heated patios on which to enjoy your dark zymurgical delights.
Hot yoga
Still attempting to live up to fitness New Year’s Resolutions? While the days are still cold, why not add a little heat to your regular yoga practice and sweat the holiday residue right out? Yoga is a perfect workout: anaerobic, it helps with both strength and flexibility, while also adding to mental health with the meditation and breath work aspects. Adding heat to the power of yoga can be a rejuvenating practice for the end of the winter season, unblocking stagnation and keeping up fitness. Yoga Pod and Radiance Power Yoga have hot offerings, and then there’s also Boulder Bikram, for that particular style of hot yoga.
Live music / theatre
Don’t miss our weekly roundup of weekend happenings, “The Boulder Weekender” (up every Friday) for the myriad live music events happening all over Boulder every single weekend (hint: there’s also lots of live music going on during the week), for any number of indie to pro to famous musical acts to enjoy over a wintry beverage.
The live theatre scene is hopping here in Boulder, too, with more than a handful of high quality companies putting on productions year round. There’s any number of theater and dance events happening at the Dairy Center (even during its renovations), and there’s the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company, Local Theatre Company, the Band of Toughs, and the BDT Stage (formerly Boulder Dinner Theatre), to name a few of the many amazing groups that provide entertainment on a late winter evening.
Snuggling by a fire
But then, sometimes there’s nothing better than to cuddle a human or animal loved one by the fire, until the trees bud again. Oh, but there are also cozy fireplaces at West End Tavern and the Trident Café, so…
